Frequently Asked Questions
Cables & Compatibility
Can I use a 22kW cable with a 7kW charger?
Yes, absolutely. A higher rated cable will always work with a lower rated charger. It just means the cable has capacity to spare. Many customers buy a 22kW cable to future proof, even if their current charger is 7kW. The cable won't make your charger faster, but it means you won't need to replace it if you upgrade.
Do you make V2L (Vehicle to Load) cables for my car?
We stock V2L cables for many popular models including Hyundai, Kia, MG, BYD, and others. We're always adding support for new vehicles. Check our V2L collection for current availability, or contact us with your car make and model and we'll confirm.
How do I know which cable is right for my car?
You need to match three things: the connector type (most UK cars use Type 2), the charging speed your car supports (typically 7kW single phase or 22kW three phase), and the length you need from charger to charging port. If you're unsure, use our Cable Finder tool or contact us with your car registration and we'll recommend the right cable.
What cable length should I choose?
Measure the distance from your charger to your car's charging port, then add a couple of metres for comfort. Remember the cable will drape rather than run in a straight line. Our most popular lengths are 5m and 10m for home use. We offer cables from 1m up to 30m+.
What's the difference between a tethered and untethered cable?
An untethered cable has plugs on both ends and connects your car to a wallbox or public charger. A tethered cable has a plug on one end and is permanently wired into a wallbox on the other. If your wallbox already has a cable attached, that's tethered. If it has an empty socket, you need an untethered cable.
Orders & Delivery
Can I change my order after placing it?
If your cable hasn't entered production yet, we can usually amend specifications like length or power rating. Contact us as soon as possible with your order number and the change you need. If production has already started, we may need to arrange a return and new order.
Do you ship to Ireland and Europe?
Yes. We ship to Ireland (EUR pricing, typically 3 to 5 working days) and can ship to mainland Europe. Shipping rates and delivery times vary by destination. International orders may be subject to local customs duties.
How long does delivery take?
Every cable is built to order in our UK facility, which means your cable is made specifically for you. Standard orders typically ship within 1 to 3 working days, with delivery via Royal Mail or Parcelforce. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your cable is dispatched.
Why did my order arrive in separate deliveries?
Some items like cable mats and bags ship from a different location to your cable, so they may arrive on different days. Both will have their own tracking. If anything appears to be missing after a few days, get in touch and we'll look into it.
Returns & Refunds
Can I exchange my cable for a different specification?
Yes. If you've ordered the wrong length, power rating, or connector type, contact us and we'll arrange a return and help you order the correct cable. Many customers find our Cable Finder tool helpful for confirming the right spec before reordering.
How do I start a return?
Email us at support@wottz.com with your order number and reason for the return. We'll issue an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorisation) number and the return address. Please don't send items back without an RMA as this can delay your refund.
How long do refunds take?
Once we receive your returned cable, refunds are typically processed within 2 to 3 working days. It may take an additional 3 to 5 working days for the funds to appear in your account depending on your bank or payment provider.
What is your return policy?
You can return your cable within 30 days of delivery for a full refund, provided it's unused and in its original condition. Cables that have been used or show signs of wear are not eligible for return unless faulty. Contact us to start a return and we'll issue an RMA number with return instructions.
Warranty & Care
My cable has stopped working. What should I do?
First, check that the issue isn't with your charger or vehicle by trying a different charging point and cable if possible. If the cable itself appears to be the problem, contact us with your order number and a description of the fault. We may ask for photos of the connectors. If it's a warranty issue, we'll repair or replace it.
How should I store my EV cable?
Store your cable in a dry location, ideally in the carry bag provided. Avoid leaving connectors exposed to rain or standing water, as moisture on the contacts can cause oxidation over time. Coil the cable loosely to avoid kinks. Do not leave the connector on the ground, use the Wottz wall holder to keep the cable off the ground.
Is water damage covered under warranty?
Water damage caused by leaving connectors exposed to the elements is not covered under warranty, as this falls under environmental damage rather than a manufacturing defect. We design our cables to be robust, but the contacts are copper and will corrode if repeatedly exposed to moisture. Proper storage prevents this.
What does the 2 year warranty cover?
Our warranty covers manufacturing defects and component failure under normal use for 2 years from purchase. This includes issues with connectors, internal wiring, and build quality. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse, accidental damage, or environmental damage such as water ingress.
Charging & Technical
Can I replace the cable on my wallbox charger?
If your wallbox is untethered (has an open socket), you simply plug in a new cable. If it's tethered (cable permanently attached), the cable can be replaced by a qualified electrician, provided the unit isn't sealed. We sell tethered cables for this purpose. Contact us with your wallbox make and model and we'll confirm compatibility.
What charging speed will I get?
Your charging speed depends on three factors: your car's onboard charger, your chargepoint rating, and your cable rating. The slowest combination of the three determines your speed. For example: A vehicle with an 11kW onboard charger or OBC, uses a charging cable rated at 11kW (16A per phase across 3 phases) and is plugged into a 7kW chargepoint (32A per phase across a single phase). The vehicle will charge at 3kW. This is because it is limited to a 16A current by the cable and it is limited to a single phase by the chargepoint. For this example we would recommend a 7kW cable as even though the car can theoretically handle 11kW charging most domestic properties in the UK will be limited to 7kW output (32A per phase across a single phase).
What is the diameter of the cables?
Cable diameter varies by power rating. A 7kW (single phase) cable is approximately 12.5mm diameter, while a 22kW (three phase) cable is approximately 16mm diameter. This is useful to know when selecting cable bags, wall mounts, or routing through tight spaces. 3kW - 10.5mm (Also used in portable chargers); 7kW - 12.5mm; 11kW - 13mm; 22kW - 16mm.
