How to choose your cable

There are three ways to charge an electric vehicle. Each one needs a different cable. Choose the option that matches how you want to charge.

From an EV charger (Untethered)

You have a wallbox charger at home with a socket or you use public charging stations. You need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable to connect your car to the charger.

From a standard plug socket

No charger installed? Our portable charger plugs into any standard UK 3-pin socket and charges your car overnight. No installation, no electrician, no fuss.

Ideal as a backup charger or if you rent and can't install a wallbox.

Power from your EV (V2L)

Some electric vehicles can discharge power to run appliances, tools, or charge other devices. If your car supports Vehicle-to-Load, you need a V2L discharge cable.

Perfect for camping, power cuts, or running tools on site.

From an EV charger (Tethered)

You have a wallbox charger at home with a cable connected to it. You need a Type 2 or Type 1 cable you can install into the unit perhaps to give you a longer cable.

Most electricians can install it for you.

Will it work with my car?

Almost certainly. Every electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sold in the UK since 2018 uses a Type 2 connector. All Wottz cables use Type 2 as standard. If your car has a round charging port with 7 pins, a Wottz cable will fit.

Quick spec check

Connector

Type 2 is the standard for all UK EVs since 2018. Older Nissan Leafs and some Japanese imports use Type 1.

Charging speed

7kW (single phase) is standard for most home chargers. 22kW (three phase) is available at some workplaces and public locations.

Cable length

5m covers most home setups. Choose 10m if your charger is further from your parking spot. We also make custom lengths.

Amperage

32A is our standard. It handles both 7kW single phase and 22kW three phase. You don't need to match amps. Your car draws only what it can take.

Common questions

My car is a Tesla. Do I need a special cable?

No. Teslas sold in the UK use the standard Type 2 connector, so any Wottz Type 2 cable will work. We also make a Tesla-branded version if you prefer the look, but electrically they are identical.

What if I buy the wrong cable?

We offer free returns within 30 days. But if you are unsure, send us a message with your car make and model and we will confirm which cable you need before you buy.

Do I need a single phase or three phase cable?

Most UK homes have single phase electricity, which means a 7kW charge rate. Three phase (22kW) is more common at workplaces and commercial premises. Our 32A cables handle both. Your car and charger will automatically negotiate the right speed.

Can I use a 22kW cable on a 7kW charger?

Yes. A higher-rated cable will always work on a lower-rated charger. The charger and car negotiate the actual charging speed automatically. You will never damage anything by using a cable rated above your charger's output.

What length cable should I get?

Measure the distance from your charger to your car's charging port, then add a metre or two for slack. 5m works for most driveways where the charger is near the parking spot. 10m gives you more flexibility. We also make custom lengths if you need something specific.

Still not sure?

Send us your car registration or just tell us your make and model. We will confirm exactly which cable you need.
