Portable (Granny) Charger
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.9/5 on Trustpilot · 1,200+ reviews (as EV Cables — now Wottz)
Built & Tested In UK · Free Delivery (orders over £99) · 2 Year Warranty
Portable EV charger that works with any standard power socket. Choose your vehicle type, power source and cable length. Built to order in the UK.
Is the portable charger what I need?
This is a charger, not just a cable. It has a built-in control box (Mode 2) and plugs into an ordinary power socket - a standard UK 3-pin, a European Schuko, or an industrial Commando outlet - turning it into a charging point for your car. Use it where there's no dedicated EV charger: at home before you've fitted a wallbox, at the office, holiday lets, family's houses, or abroad.
If you already charge from a wallbox or public charge point and just need the type of cable to fit between it and your car, you want the untethered cable instead - not this.
First choice - your power source
UK 3-pin (10A Max)
The most versatile option. Plugs into any normal domestic UK socket and charges at up to 2.4kW - roughly 15 hours for a 20–80% top-up on a typical 60kWh car. Ideal as a back-up, for occasional charging, or before your wallbox is installed.
Schuko (13A)
The European 2-pin standard. Charges at a similar rate to the UK plug. This is the one to pack if you're driving in France, Germany, Spain, Italy or most of mainland Europe. Many drivers buy both the UK and Schuko versions to cover every scenario.
Commando 32A (7kW)
Connects to a 32A single-phase industrial (Commando) socket and unlocks the full 7kW - around 5 hours for a 20–80% top-up, roughly three times faster than a 3-pin. The catch: you need a Commando outlet fitted (an electrician's job), so this suits garages, workshops, or anyone who wants near-wallbox speed without a wallbox.
Second choice - your car's connector
Type 2 - the standard for almost every modern EV and plug-in hybrid sold in the UK and Europe (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, MG, Polestar, Volvo and more). If your car is recent, this is almost certainly you.
Type 1 - for older vehicles with a J1772 port, such as pre-2018 Nissan Leafs and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Choose this only if you've confirmed your car has a Type 1 inlet.

Is this the same thing as a 'Granny' charger?
Yes — this is a "granny charger" (just a properly engineered one)
"Granny charger" is the nickname for a portable EV charger that plugs into a normal domestic socket - so named because it's the lead you'd use to top up at your gran's house, where there's no wallbox. The Wottz Portable Charger is exactly that. The difference is in the build: intelligent Mode 2 charging, real-time plug temperature monitoring, and 28-point UK testing, rather than the flimsy unit that came boxed with your car. Same job, done properly.

Every unit is assembled and tested in our UK facility before shipping.

What Our Customers Say
The quality is leagues ahead of any other charging cable I've used. Lightweight, flexible, and beautifully made. You can tell this was designed by people who actually care about the product.
— James T.
I've tried three different EV cables before finding Wottz. The difference in build quality is immediately obvious. The flex is incredibly light and easy to handle, even in the rain.
— Sarah M.
Ordered a 7.5m cable and it arrived the next day. The carry bag is a nice touch. Everything about this feels premium. From the packaging to the plug design. Won't be going anywhere else.
— Mark H.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which power socket option should I choose?
UK 3-pin (10A) is the most versatile. Plug into any domestic socket and charge at up to 2.4kW. Ideal for overnight charging at home, visiting family, or holiday lets.
Schuko (12A) is the European standard. If you're driving to France, Germany, or anywhere in mainland Europe, this is the one to pack.
Commando (7kW) connects to a 32A single-phase industrial outlet. If you have a dedicated Commando socket installed (or plan to), this delivers full 7kW charging speed without needing a wallbox.
How fast does it charge?
Charging speed depends on the power socket:
UK 3-pin: up to 2.4kW (10A). A typical 60kWh battery charges from 20% to 80% in roughly 15 hours.
Schuko: up to 2.8kW (12A). Slightly faster than UK 3-pin.
Commando: up to 7kW (32A single-phase). A typical 60kWh battery charges from 20% to 80% in around 5 hours.
The charger automatically negotiates the maximum safe current with your vehicle.
Is it safe to charge from a standard socket?
Yes, when using a properly designed Mode 2 charger like the Wottz Portable. The built-in control unit manages the charging session, monitors the supply plug temperature in real time, and will reduce or stop charging if it detects any issue.
We recommend using a dedicated socket (not an extension lead or multi-plug adapter) and having your wiring checked by an electrician if you plan to charge regularly from the same outlet.
Can I use it abroad?
Yes. The Schuko version plugs directly into European sockets found in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and most of mainland Europe. If you have the UK version, you would need a travel adapter rated for the appropriate current.
Many customers buy both a UK and Schuko version to cover all scenarios.
Do I need Type 1 or Type 2?
Type 2 is the standard for almost all modern EVs sold in the UK and Europe. If you drive a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, MG, Polestar, or Volvo, you need Type 2.
Type 1 (J1772) is used by some older vehicles, including early Nissan Leafs (pre-2018), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and some older American imports.
Not sure? Check your car's charging port or ask us.
